BOY SCOUTS

The Boy Scout program is available to boys who have completed fifth grade, or who are 11 through 17 years old. Boy Scout members join a Scout Troop of their choice, regardless of the neighborhood they live in, or the school in which they attend. The key is that the troop is a “good fit” for the boy and his family, based primarily on the specific program activities that the particular troop offers.

The Scouting program has three objectives, commonly referred to as the “Aims of Scouting.” They are CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, CITIZENSHIP TRAINING and PERSONAL FITNESS.

The methods by which the aims are achieved include IDEALS (as spelled out in the Scout Oath and Law); PATROLS (teaching the benefits small group participation, responsibility, and elected representation); OUTDOOR PROGRAMS (learning useful skills and participating in exciting adventures while gaining an appreciation of the world around us); ADVANCEMENT (providing a series of surmountable obstacles and steps in overcoming them); ASSOCIATION WITH ADULTS (interacting with positive role models and having another source of encouragement in their lives); PERSONAL GROWTH (participating in community service, the religious emblems program and frequent conferences with the Scoutmaster helping the boy determine his growth toward Scouting’s aims); LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (participating in both shared and total leadership situations and accepting the leadership role of others guiding boys toward the citizenship aim of Scouting); and UNIFORM (making the troop visible as a force for good in the community, showing each boy’s commitment to the aims and purposes of Scouting, giving identity with a world brotherhood of youth who believe in the same ideals, and providing a way for Boy Scouts to wear their badges to show what they have accomplished).
